Colombia stops coal exports to Israeli territory

Bogota, June 9 (QNA) – Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Saturday that his country would stop coal exports to Israeli territory until the “genocide” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip ends.

Petro said on X that coal exports to Israel would be suspended “until the genocide stops.” The decision came after Petro severed his country’s diplomatic relations with the Israeli side in May, calling the government of Benjamin Netanyahu “genocidal.”

Colombia has also stopped purchasing Israeli-made weapons.

The Colombian government clarified that the ban will come into force five days after publication in the country’s Official Gazette. It said that between January and August 2023, Colombia exported $375 million worth of goods to Israel, with a significant portion of that amount being coal.

Colombia’s Ministry of Trade and Industry confirmed that coal exports will only resume if Israel complies with a recent order from the International Court of Justice. (QNA)
