Dumka: A 20-year-old youth was arrested on charges of raping and murdering a teenage girl, whose body was found on the outskirts of a village in Dumka district on April 29, police officials said on Monday. The victim went missing on the morning of April 25. The youth was remanded in custody on Monday, police added. Dumka police commissioner Pitamber Singh Kherwar said, “The accused was in a relationship with the deceased for the last few years. But the parents of the deceased girl consummated their marriage elsewhere. The defendant could not accept this and called her to a hill on April 25 under the pretext of meeting her for the last time. He repeatedly raped her there before strangling her to death on April 27.” Referring to the confessed statement of the accused, Jarmundi Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Santosh Kumar, who headed the SIT set up to investigate the case, said, “The Accused resorted to violence after the girl refused to marry him. He held her captive and denied her food until he strangled her to death on April 27. He kept her hands tied with a rope and stuffed a cloth in her mouth so that she could not scream.” The accused bought battery acid from a shop and poured it on his body to hide his identity, the SDPO added added. Items including a rope, a towel, a pair of slippers belonging to the victim, broken bangles and hair clips were recovered from the spot.
