Springfield, MA police officer shot, 7 arrested – NECN

A police officer was seriously injured in one of at least two shootings Wednesday night in Springfield, Massachusetts, police said. Seven people were arrested.

Isak Font, 18, is suspected of shooting the officer, who was on his way to work, with an AR-15 rifle from a Jeep on State Street near Hunter Place around 11 p.m., Springfield police said. The officer is expected to survive.

This shooting, according to police, followed a shooting on College Street at about 10:40 p.m. They said individuals in a Honda Civic opened fire on investigators from the Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit.

Police said seven people were arrested, including Font, and seven illegal weapons were seized. It was not immediately clear whether Font had a lawyer who could comment on his arrest.

NBC affiliate WWLP reported that several incidents occurred late Wednesday that required police intervention and closed streets in the city, including Interstate 91. It was not immediately clear whether and how all of the incidents were related.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Chief Lawrence Akers planned to hold a press conference on the shooting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
