Five dead in car crash on St. Helena Island | Beaufort County

ISLAND OF ST. HELENA – Five people were killed in a three-vehicle accident on the island of St. Helena on May 29.

The accident occurred on Sea Island Parkway near the intersection with Polowana Road around 10:30 p.m.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 2009 BMW sedan with four passengers was traveling south when the driver attempted to pass a 2004 Toyota Tundra that was also traveling south. The BMW collided head-on with a 2009 Honda Accord that was traveling north.

After the collision, the BMW left the road, overturned and caught fire.

“The BMW turned on its side and was fully damaged,” Scott Harris, spokesman for the Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District, told The Post and Courier. “It had caught fire. The gas tank had burst.”

While trying to avoid the collision, the Tundra also went off the road and crashed into the BMW.

All four occupants of the BMW died at the scene of the accident, as did the Honda driver. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the names of the accident victims.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
