Benin The royal family announced yesterday the suspension of Professor Gregory Akenzua from the family.

Akenzua is one of the suspended Enigie (dukes) who took the Oba of Benin to court to challenge their suspension.

Akenzua, Professor of Pediatrics, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin and former Chairman of the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, is the younger brother of Oba Erediauwa, father of Oba Ewuare II.

At a press conference, members of the royal family said that despite all requests, Akenzua had chosen to challenge Benin’s traditional institutions through his actions, which were in complete contradiction to the customs and practices of the Beninese people and the core values of the Beninese royal family.

When contacted, Akenzua said he was in Lagos “on an appointment” and asked for time.

But George Eweka said in a statement on behalf of the royal family: “Akenzua has betrayed the core values of respect for Benin’s customs and traditions; devotion and submission to the traditional hierarchy of the Kingdom of Benin and respect for the traditional process of mediation. Instead, he has chosen the path of rebellion.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Royal Family wishes to stress that the Oba of Benin occupies a unique position as the father of all members of the Benin Royal Family regardless of age. Therefore, the Royal Family does not have an Okaegbe like other families in the Kingdom of Benin, but Odion Egbe who is traditionally obliged to yield precedence to the Oba.

“The Royal Family further points out that in complete violation of the hierarchy of succession to the position of Odion-Egbe of the Royal Family of Benin, Akenzua has been posing as the Odion-Egbe of the Royal Family and holding meetings to impose himself as such, despite knowing that the position which is much lower in the hierarchy of the Royal Family of Benin does not rightfully belong to him.

“The Royal Family of Benin has given Akenzua ample opportunities to reverse his mistake and return to the path of honour and dignity, but Akenzua has rejected and refused the opportunities offered to him by the Royal Family to reverse his wrong steps.

“After careful consideration of the facts, the Royal Family of Benin has decided as follows: Akenzua is hereby suspended from the Royal Family of Benin for his rebellious acts against the traditional institutions of Benin.

“That Akenzua no longer participates in activities associated with the Royal Family of Benin;

“All members of the Beninese royal family are strongly advised not to have any relationship, affiliation or contact with Akenzua while he is suspended from the Beninese royal family.”
