The man, a UW graduate, was arrested for allegedly disarming and assaulting or threatening law enforcement officers. Disarming and assaulting or threatening a police officer are both Class H serious crimes In Wisconsin, the person faces up to 12 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

The MPD contacted the individual at home on Thursday, May 23, and they were arrested the following evening while bringing groceries into their home, according to a opinion by Students for Justice in Palestine.

SJP expressed concern about the timing of the arrest, which occurred just before a holiday weekend.

“MPD knew that if they arrested the individual on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, he would be incarcerated for the entire holiday weekend as he would not be able to be tried until the following Tuesday,” the statement said. “This was a deliberate move on their part to force this individual to remain incarcerated for the long weekend and create chaos within the movement.”
