Former Houston Astros All-Star Placed on Toronto Blue Jays Trading Block

The Toronto Blue Jays will have all eyes on them at the MLB trade deadline this season. Many MLB executives expect the Blue Jays to be sellers this season after starting the year 23-28 and ranking dead last in the American League East race.

There’s also the issue of their bloated roster which is top-heavy and full of stars but lacks the depth and talent on the sidelines to pose much of a threat. Hence why they might be willing to part ways with some of the biggest names in the organization if it means giving the restart a boost.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, one name that could be on the trading block is former Houston Astros All-Star George Springer.

“The Toronto Blue Jays are the team buyers are watching at the trade deadline, knowing they could move first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., shortstop Bo Bichette, DH Justin Turner, outfielders George Springer and Kevin Kiermaier, closer Jordan Romano and starters Yusei Kikuchi and Chris Bassitt,” Nightengale wrote.

This is basically anyone with some commercial value. But Springer, the four-time All-Star, including three with the Astros, may have the least value with his 56 OPS+ in his age-34 season.

It’s hard not to notice the precipitous drop in Springer’s production since joining the Blue Jays as a free agent in 2021. He’s still considered an elite defender, but all of his offensive metrics have dived.

And while Springer is available, there’s almost no chance Houston would consider acquiring him at the MLB trade deadline, even if they could use some help in center field.
