25-year-old charged with drug offenses and assault on police officer after incident in Pike

At 12:29 a.m. on May 20, an officer noticed a parked and occupied vehicle with stolen license plates in a parking lot in the 5500 block of Columbia Pike, Arlington police said.

With the assistance of other officers, the vehicle was stopped. While attempting to flee the scene, the suspect backed his vehicle into an officer’s patrol car and crashed into a fence and a parked car, police said.

The suspect then exited the vehicle and did not comply with officers’ instructions before being taken into custody, police said.

While in custody, the suspect gave officers false information about himself, and after the suspect was correctly identified, it was determined that he was wanted from other jurisdictions, police said.

During the course of the investigation, suspected narcotics were seized from the suspect’s vehicle. It turned out that it had been stolen in Fairfax County, police said.

The suspect – 25-year-old Ahmed Abuelhassan of Fairfax – was arrested and charged with assault on police, unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal damage (two counts), possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute (two counts), possession of Schedule I/II narcotics (two counts), and identity theft. He was held without bail.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
