10-year-old from Alabama dies days after swimming accident during party with baseball team

A 10-year-old boy died in the hospital last week after an accident at a Northport swimming pool. According to Warrior Baseball, a youth baseball league based out of Kentuck Park in Northport, player RJ Paulk Jr. died Tuesday after a lengthy stay in intensive care. A GoFundMe campaign set up on behalf of the Paulk family says RJ, a fourth-grader at Faucett-Vestavia Elementary, suffered an “unexpected water accident” at his baseball team’s pool party on May 16. Warrior Baseball said the event was organized to celebrate the end of the season. According to Northport Fire Chief Bart Marshall, emergency crews responded to a private resident’s swimming pool around 6 p.m. after a child had been reported drowned. Upon arrival, Marshall said CPR was performed and that it was unclear how long the boy had been underwater. “RJ was called to the Lord early this morning,” Warrior Baseball posted on social media late Tuesday night. “There are no words that can fully express the depth of this loss for his family and all who knew him. It is only tempered by the knowledge that he is home and at peace with God.” Jared Case, RJ’s baseball coach, described him as Jesus-like.
