4 canoeists rescued after capsizing in Long Island Sound

Four people were rescued after their canoe capsized in Long Island Sound, officials said.

According to police, Darwin Ortis, Adrian Selaya, Walter Noriega and Gelyn Linairs were in two canoes north of Wading River Beach when they capsized and fell overboard last night.

The water was about 58 degrees when one of them was able to call 911.

Aviation officials located the four people and directed Marine Bureau officials to evacuate them to safety.

Two of the victims were taken to the hospital for hypothermia.
