New information about the couple – NBC Boston

Investigators believe two people killed by an MBTA Commuter Rail train in Natick, Massachusetts, on Monday were together, authorities said, sharing new information Tuesday about what led to their deaths .

According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, one of the people appeared to have tried to free the other from the tracks before he was struck by the train and killed. They didn’t suspect foul play.

The couple has not been publicly identified, but officials said they are a 65-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man.

Her death was reported around 6 p.m. The train had traveled from Worcester to Boston.

Previously, witnesses had seen the woman near the tracks and went down to help her. Then they discovered the man who wanted to help her off the tracks, the prosecutor said. The witnesses set off and a few moments later the man and woman were hit by the train.

State, local and transit police investigators were investigating whether the couple had been seen in the area before.

They did not say Tuesday what the couple was believed to have been doing in the area.

On Monday, Transit Police Department Supt. Richard Sullivan confirmed that the victims were pronounced dead at the scene due to their injuries.

Aerial footage showed a bicycle parked next to the tracks and officers at the scene with evidence markers littering the ground.
