Aurora man arrested after allegedly kidnapping and sexually abusing a young girl

AURORA, Colo. — Aurora police have arrested a man suspected of kidnapping and assaulting a teenage girl who was on her way to her bus stop Friday morning.

On Friday morning, Aurora Police Department officers responded to a call involving a child. They learned that an 11-year-old girl had reported that she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted on the way to the bus stop, police said.

According to the officers’ preliminary investigation, a man approached the girl, grabbed her arm and took her to his nearby apartment, where he allegedly assaulted her. The girl was able to escape and found a person who helped her call 911, police said.

Police found probable cause to search the suspect’s residence, located on the 1400 block of Mason Street. They then arrested 31-year-old Shukurani Mulenda, who is a registered sex offender, police said. They found no known relationship between Mulenda and the child.

He is charged with second-degree kidnapping and sexual assault of a child.

Aurora police said he was a registered sex offender following an incident in 2019.

Police said they do not know at this time whether the suspect victimized anyone else. Further details were initially not known.
