One man was killed and another injured after being hit while crossing the street in East Harlem

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) — Police are investigating after a 51-year-old man was hit and killed by a car in East Harlem on Monday afternoon.

Police said a driver “failed to navigate the road properly” and hit two men as they were crossing the street.

A 51-year-old man was admitted to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in critical condition.

The second victim, also a 51-year-old man, was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, where he is expected to survive.

One woman said the bang was so loud that she heard it in her apartment.

“I was sitting in my living room and suddenly I heard a loud bang. It was so violent. And when I got to the window, all I could see was people trying to get him out and they put him on the floor,” said an eyewitness named Gloria.

Surveillance video shows a woman pushing a shopping cart stopping before crossing First Avenue. A white sedan then appears to drive up to a curb and slam into the cart. The car then slams into a parked car, which in turn strikes two men.

Neighbors who knew the victim said he had lived in the area his entire life.

“We did our homework. He comes from far away. There were things, but my baby changed. He tried to do the right thing. He was a nice guy, he always made you laugh,” said a neighbor.

“I was very sick, I had cancer, and he always made me laugh and said, come over and sit with me in front of the TV,” said a neighbor.

The second person hit was also seriously injured and is in critical condition

The investigation is ongoing. It is unclear whether charges will be brought against the driver.
