One dead and 17 injured in early morning motorway accident on PDC

Playa del Carmen, QR — One person was killed and more than a dozen injured in a two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning. The accident occurred on a stretch of federal highway about 20 kilometers north of Playa del Carmen when an SUV reportedly crashed into the rear of a hotel staff vehicle.

At the time of the accident, 17 employees of the Riviera Maya Hotel and the driver were in the company car. A woman in the company car was killed. The remaining 16 employees and the driver were injured. Three of the 17 injured people suffered serious injuries.

According to the information available, the driver of the SUV hit the van at high speed, causing it to overturn. The van ended up on its side in the vegetation on the side of the road.

The driver of the SUV was also seriously injured. The front of his vehicle was completely destroyed after the high-speed rear-end collision on the motorway.

The accident occurred on Sunday at around 5:40 a.m. between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos. The National Guard and Solidaridad fire department were on site along with ambulances. The injured were taken to various hospitals in Playa del Carmen.

Traffic on the motorway was significantly slowed down by the deployment of emergency vehicles. An official cause for the fatal early morning accident is not yet known.

The accident on Sunday morning occurred in the same area as two days earlier, when a car accident had already occurred in which a female driver was seriously injured.
