Authorities close Crater Road again as wildfires continue

KULA, Hawaii — After reopening Crater Road on July 24, Maui County officials closed the road again at 6 a.m. July 27 due to safety concerns related to the nearby 574-acre Crater Road Fire, Maui County officials said.

The road in the kilometer 3 area will remain closed until 6 p.m. on August 3.

As of Friday evening, authorities said the fire in Upper Kula remained 80 percent contained.

According to the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety, work done during the week-long closure will allow the road to reopen on August 3.
