Thompson survives Shang and reaches the final

Australia’s Jordan Thompson, seeded No. 4, advanced to the Atlanta Open final by beating Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Saturday.

Thompson, ranked 41st, will next face the winner of the match between Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and France’s Arthur Rinderknech.

The Australian beat French lucky loser Harold Mayot (6-2, 7-5) and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, seeded No. 5 (7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3) before his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Atlanta Open, Shang, ranked 89th, won against American wildcard Andres Martin (6-1, 6-1), American Ben Shelton, seeded number 1 (7-6 (6), 6-4) and Australian Max Purcell, seeded number 8 (7-6 (3), 6-4).
