Athens-Clarke police use beanbag-firing weapon during arrest

Athens-Clarke police used a firearm described as a “less lethal” weapon to subdue an Athens man who, according to a police report, became agitated when police confronted him about his impending arrest.

The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday in front of the Inn Between the Hedges motel on Atlanta Highway when officers converged on the scene in search of a man wanted for aggravated assault.

The robbery suspect and two other men were at the motel, where police discovered that one of the men, a 32-year-old Athens resident, was also wanted on a warrant. However, the man did not cooperate when police told him he was going to be arrested, according to the report.
