Oyo nurses suspend indefinite strike

The Oyo chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its indefinite strike.

Confirming the decision, the Chairman of the Governing Body of Oyo State Hospital, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, said the union had suspended the previously announced strike following the intervention of the Oyo State government.

A letter suspending the strike, signed jointly by the state chairman, Adeyemi Samuel, and secretary, Comrade Aina Emmanuel, said the decision was a result of the state government’s commitment to meet the demands of the association’s leadership.

The letter said the NANNM Oyo State Council had “agreed to suspend our indefinite strike for one month,” adding: “This is to enable the remaining approved protest actions to be carried out.”

“In light of the above, all of our members across the state have been instructed to return to duty effective Wednesday, July 24, 2024.”

The association also expressed optimism that the state government “will not let up in its efforts to meet all our demands.”

Reacting to the suspension, Dr Fagbemi praised the efforts of Governor Seyi Makinde, who he said assured the nurses that their demands would be implemented.
