First weather warning: Heavy rain possible today

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – Good morning!

Rain and storms likely today: It looks like we could see another round of showers and thunderstorms in central Alabama this afternoon and evening. The day will start off cloudy with temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees. Many of us will likely experience scattered showers on our morning commute.

Hourly forecast today

We’re holding out for a 70 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms today. Some of the rain could be heavy. Flooding will be the biggest concern, especially in areas south and east of Interstate 20/59, where several inches of rain have already fallen in the past week. With overcast skies and a high chance of rain, I think today’s highs will be a few degrees cooler, just above 80 degrees. If it stays drier in some spots, temperatures could briefly rise to just above 80 degrees. I think today is the best chance of rain for most of central Alabama.

The wet pattern continues until the end of the week: It looks like this weather pattern won’t change much through the end of the work week. Rain chances remain at 40 to 60% for Thursday and Friday. We may see fewer showers and storms by the weekend. I still think we’ll see some isolated activity at 40 to 50% on both Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will stay around 30 degrees on Thursday and a little warmer on Friday. The weekend could get a few degrees warmer, with highs in the 30s.

7-day forecast
7-day forecast(WBRC)

I still think there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms early next week, but the chance of rain will not be widespread. Rainfall totals over the next seven days could be between 1 and 3 inches. Higher amounts are possible east of I-65.

Tropical Update: The National Hurricane Center continues to show calm conditions over the Atlantic for the next five to seven days. Dry air and Saharan dust are responsible for the calm pattern over the Atlantic. It looks like conditions will become more favorable for tropical development in early August, but our long-range weather models don’t show anything special after seven days.

Hurricane season typically peaks in September and ends on November 30th.
