Mixed weather for Mother’s Day weekend, heavy rain possible next week

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Today’s forecast: A cool front slowly sinking south into the Gulf of Mexico will gradually bring in less moist and slightly cooler air. It will still be quite warm today, with highs around 90 degrees, but lower humidity should temper the heat a bit. And after a few overnight storms near the state line, we should stay dry for the rest of the day.

The forecast for Live After Five tonight looks good. You’ll want to dress comfortably because temperatures start in the high 80s and drop to around 80 degrees by the end at 8 p.m.

Mother’s Day weekend

On Saturday it will be noticeably more pleasant outdoors as temperatures return to near normal and humidity continues to drop. Morning temperatures will start in the mid 60s, afternoon highs will be in the mid 80s with partly cloudy skies.

On Sunday (Mother’s Day) the pattern quickly begins to shift again. Today’s front, currently offshore, will retreat northward as a warm front, bringing with it a rapid return of moisture and a chance of rain. At the moment I’m forecasting it to be mostly dry through early afternoon, but isolated showers and squalls look possible through the afternoon and into the evening. Highs will return to near normal, peaking in the mid-80s.

More rain next week

An active pattern is expected to prevail next week as a series of upper air disturbances spread across the Deep South. Showers and squalls are expected on Monday, and heavy rainfall is also possible locally. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) continues to report a Level 2/4 (Minor) flood risk.

Rain may ease somewhat for much of Tuesday into Wednesday before a good chance of rain returns on Thursday. Temperatures look to be seasonally warm throughout the week, with morning lows ranging from the mid 60s to near 70 degrees and highs mostly in the mid to upper 80s.

Rainfall amounts

The WPC’s 7-day outlook is on the aggressive side, showing much of our area receiving more than 4 to 5 inches of rain by next Friday morning. While we believe multiple showers next week are a good bet, there is still some uncertainty about the placement of the heaviest rainfall, so we are keeping an eye on the trends.
