Police in El Paso arrest woman for cruelly abandoning dog Eva, who is now recovering

Last month, a woman was arrested by police in El Paso after allegedly abandoning her injured dog in a ditch – a dog who not only survived but thrived after being rescued and placed in a new home.

El Paso Animal Services announced Monday that Erika Trevino was arrested on June 22 after allegedly abandoning her dog “in a ditch, injuring her and leaving her to die.”

Trevino was reportedly taken into custody by El Paso Police on an outstanding warrant related to animal cruelty.

Likewise, the El Paso Animal Services Protection Field Division assisted the El Paso Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit in the animal cruelty investigation.

According to El Paso Animal Services, Trevino’s case dates back to August 2023.

A subsequent investigation indicated that Trevino was a suspect in the case.

El Paso Animal Services reported that Trevino’s dog, now named Eva, “has found love and security… and is now able to go on long walks, playfully romp around in the lush green grass and enjoy cozy snuggles with his new family.”

“This arrest is an important step in our ongoing efforts to combat animal cruelty in our community,” said Gina Ramirez, Animal Welfare Division Director. “We are committed to ensuring that those who abuse animals are held accountable for their actions. We also want to express our deepest gratitude to the Detective in Charge of the El Paso Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit, who played a critical role in obtaining justice for Eva and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”

El Paso Animal Services has reminded residents that they play a “critical role” in the fight against animal cruelty and should report any suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect by calling 311 or 911.
