FREE Meals for Children Affected by Hurricane Beryl in the Houston Area

HOUSTON (KIAH) — Families are struggling to get back to normal a week after Hurricane Beryl impacted millions in Southeast Texas. Now, another group is making sure kids get the food they need.

Starting today, July 15, IDEA Public Schools will be serving free meals to ALL children affected by Hurricane Beryl. All children, 18 years of age or younger, are eligible for free, nutritious meals. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. And the child does not have to be an IDEA student.

Free meals will be served starting today, July 15, at IDEA Spears and IDEA Hardy and starting Wednesday, July 17, at IDEA Lake Houston.

“Many children in our community are at risk of hunger due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl,” said Maria Aguirre, assistant cafeteria manager at IDEA Spears. “But no matter the situation, our calling is to serve those in need, and we are grateful to be able to provide nutritious meals to our children.”

That’s why IDEA campuses in Houston, including IDEA Spears, IDEA Hardy and IDEA Lake Houston, are open with power fully restored and ready to serve children in need through the Child Nutrition Program.

Maria Aguirre, assistant cafeteria manager at IDEA Spears, said she was personally impacted by Hurricane Beryl when her home was among the 2.1 million people in Houston who lost power. Maria, her two children and her husband were without power for more than five days. However, IDEA Public Schools officials say the powerful force of nature didn’t leave her resilient spirit “strong” as she shares IDEA’s commitment to serving those in need and feeding the hungry. Maria will be back in the cafeteria to greet all children with a smile and serve them nutritious food starting Monday, July 15 at IDEA Spears. “It warms my heart to know that we will be able to provide food to the children in our community in their time of need,” said Nanette Boy, cafeteria manager at IDEA Spears.
