Street racing incident lands Peoria man two years in prison

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) – A Peoria man was sentenced to two years in prison Thursday in connection with a 2022 street race.

Peoria County District Judge John Vespa sentenced 20-year-old Jayshawn Ivy to aggravated road rage, a crime that carries a maximum prison sentence of three years.

In exchange for his guilty plea on Thursday, prosecutors agreed to drop three counts of drunken driving and two additional counts of aggravated racial discrimination.

Since he has already been credited with about 20 days in custody and will be given credit for each day of “misdemeanor,” it is possible that he will be released within a year.

Ivy was charged shortly after the accident, but the case lay dormant until this spring, when he was arrested and tried. He was granted preliminary release, but the release was revoked about a month later after he picked up a second drug-related case.

On October 4, 2022, he was driving a 2012 Dodge Journey and was racing with 24-year-old Maurice Young, who was driving a Chevrolet Camero near the intersection of Jefferson and Bryan Streets.

The Journey collided with a Peoria Public Schools school bus that was carrying students at the time. According to court records, no one on the bus was seriously injured.

Three people who were in Ivy’s SUV were injured and taken to area hospitals with varying injuries.

Young was charged with traffic offenses in connection with the incident, but not with capital crimes.

He is currently awaiting trial for aggravated kidnapping and burglary in connection with an incident that occurred on July 13, 2022.
