Suspect charged with sexual assault at UCLA – NBC Los Angeles

A man accused of breaking into a UCLA dormitory and sexually assaulting a transfer student has been charged in what prosecutors called a brutal crime, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Wednesday.

The suspect, 41-year-old Jeffrey Scott Brewer Jr., was arrested in connection with the attack around 2:40 a.m. Friday.

Brewer was charged this week with sexual penetration with use of force and first-degree residential burglary in the presence of a person. It is alleged that Brewer attacked the UCLA exchange student during a burglary of the apartment.

“The brutal and violent sexual assault this survivor suffered at the hands of the alleged suspect is deeply disturbing and incomprehensible and will not be tolerated,” said District Attorney Gascón.

Brewer was arraigned on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to all charges. He is being held on $1,150,000 bail. If convicted on all charges, Brewer faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison in addition to 6 years in prison.

It was not immediately clear whether he has a lawyer.

Concerns are growing about safety on UCLA’s campus following the arrest of a homeless man who allegedly attacked a student. Ted Chen reports for NBC4 News on July 8, 2024 at 4 p.m.

A preliminary hearing for Brewer is scheduled for August 31. The sexual assault remains under investigation by the University of California, Los Angeles police.

Police have already increased security measures around the UCLA campus, and students who spoke to NBCLA report that they have not felt safe on campus for several months.
