Moped rider killed in accident in Randolph County

RANDOLPH COUNTY, NC (WGHP) — A man was killed in a fatal traffic accident Tuesday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

On Tuesday at approximately 2:38 p.m., State Police troopers arrived in the area of ​​Walker Mill Road and Wall Brothers Road in Randolph County after receiving a report of an accident.


Investigators say Jose Miguel Castillo Ruiz, 65, of Asheboro, was traveling west on Walker Mill Road on a 2004 Yamaha moped, while a 2017 Subaru Outback was also traveling west on Walker Mill Road.

The Outback’s driver failed to reduce his speed and struck Castillo Ruiz from behind, throwing him from the moped, police said. Castillo Ruiz suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital before being flown by helicopter to another hospital.

Investigators found that Castillo Ruiz died from his injuries on Wednesday morning.

Police said charges had been filed against the driver of the Outback.
