Here’s What You Need to Know Before Starting Your Generator During Houston Area Power Outages

Houston – Following a major storm, a generator can be a crucial part of your recovery.

It can power a fan, turn on lights, and keep your food cool. But many people only use a generator for emergencies and don’t use it properly. This can result in serious injury or death.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 900 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning and thousands were injured while using portable generators between 2005 and 2017.

CPSC data also indicate that about 15,400 people were treated in emergency rooms for carbon monoxide poisoning related to a portable generator during that time period.

REQUEST A SMOKE OR CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR

Carbon monoxide detectors cost about $20. If you rent, ask your landlord to install one. If you can’t afford one, the Houston Fire Department sometimes offers them for free.
