Investigation in Statesville leads to arrest of Concord man

A Concord man faces minor charges of sexual offenses and indecent conduct following an investigation launched in 2019.

Steven Joseph Borek was arrested Wednesday by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with six counts of first-degree sexual abuse and sexual abuse of a minor.

Statesville police said in a news release that investigators were alerted to a possible case of sexual abuse of a young child in December 2019. The initial investigation included an interview with the child at the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center. Due to the child’s age and the information disclosed, the case could not be prosecuted, police said.

In June, Statesville Police were contacted by the Iredell County Department of Social Services with new information about the child. The child was interviewed again at the Dove House, which led to the reopening of the criminal case.

SPD turned to the U.S. Marshal’s Service-Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force to help search for Borek. On Wednesday, marshals found Borek in a motor home at the Pilot gas station in Rowan County. After a standoff, marshals, with help from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, forced entry into the motor home and found Borek inside with an apparent self-inflicted knife wound, police said. Borek was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Statesville police said Borek would be taken into custody after his release from the hospital.
