Driver arrested after stolen single-vehicle rollover in Hamlin County | Local news

{KXLG – Watertown, SD} Early Saturday morning, July 6, 2024, a single-vehicle rollover crash occurred on US Highway 81 near 187th Street in rural Hamlin County, approximately 8 miles north of Lake Poinsett. The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Norden Ambulance were dispatched to the scene at 5:22 a.m.

Upon arrival, rescue workers found the vehicle but were unable to locate the driver. A thorough search at the scene of the accident and in a nearby forest area was unsuccessful.

Upon further investigation, the Sheriff’s Office discovered that the vehicle involved in the accident had been reported stolen the night before in the Lake Poinsett area.

The driver was found at a hospital later that day with non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. The driver, a 20-year-old man from Brookings, was subsequently arrested and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, failure to report an accident and reckless driving.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office.
