Will Jude Bellingham play today? England star banned from Euro 2024 quarter-finals against Switzerland after celebration

England will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship on Saturday after beating Slovakia 2-1 in extra time in the previous round.

The Three Lions still lack the necessary punch in the tournament and their entry into the round of the last eight is mainly thanks to midfield star Jude Bellingham.

The Real Madrid star scored the decisive goal in England’s 1-0 opening win over Serbia and his spectacular stoppage-time strike against Slovakia forced extra time before Harry Kane finally scored the winning goal in Cologne.

Despite his decisive performance on the pitch, Bellingham was involved in a controversy in the match against Slovakia and UEFA launched an investigation into the 21-year-old’s conduct.

The European Football Association has now provided an update on Bellingham’s availability for a match against the Swiss.

Is Jude Bellingham playing against Switzerland today?

England fans can breathe a sigh of relief before the game against Switzerland. UEFA grants Bellingham eligibility to play.

Following a quick investigation into Bellingham’s crotch-grabbing gesture during the Slovakia match, he learned of his punishment from UEFA on July 5 and was released from Southgate’s squad for the game against the Swiss.

UEFA imposed a fine of 30,000 euros and a suspended one-match ban on the midfielder.

This means that Bellingham will not miss a single match of the tournament because of the incident against Slovakia, unless he is found guilty of another breach of UEFA rules.

However, Turkish centre-back Merih Demiral was not spared from being punished directly for a similar offence. The player was banned for two matches after allegedly making the ‘wolf salute’ during the 2-1 round of 16 win over Austria.

What did Jude Bellingham do?

On July 1, UEFA confirmed that its Ethics and Disciplinary Board had opened an investigation into Bellingham, focusing on a possible breach of the midfielder’s “basic rules of decent conduct.”

Bellingham was seen making what appeared to be a crotch grab gesture after his spectacular overhead kick. The player later said on social media that it was an “inside joke” for friends at the stadium and was not aimed at the opposing bench.

🥱❌- An inside joke to some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for the performance of the Slovakian team tonight.🤝🏽 https://t.co/H8sETMkPoi

The suspicion was that Bellingham may have violated Rule 11 2b of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations for 2024. The article in question states that any person subject to UEFA regulations must “adhere to the principles of ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship”.

Article 11 makes it clear that anyone “whose conduct is offensive or otherwise contravenes basic rules of decent behaviour” is in breach of these principles.
