Two Americans raped in shocking ordeal in Sicily: reports

Two Italians were arrested on Friday after being accused of separating and then raping two American women, local media reported.

The police said The Mezzogiorno Corriere that the two men approached the women on a scooter as they were trying to use a cigarette machine in Syracuse, a city in Sicily. When the men pretended to offer their help to the women, who were both in the country to study, they conspired to separate them.

The two men eventually succeeded, police said. One woman was allegedly attacked near a marina, while another was allegedly taken to a house and raped. Both women reported their attacks to police on Thursday, and the men were taken into custody on Friday.

According to ANSA, the suspects were arrested for aggravated sexual assault.

However, the identities of those involved were not disclosed. Ray claims the men originally come from Syracuse.

The attack came months after a Canadian woman was raped in Palermo, Sicily’s largest city. The U.S. State Department has currently issued a level two travel advisory for Italy, warning of possible terrorist attacks.
