Man from Usgao arrested for raping deaf-mute relative | News from Goa

Pond: Ponda police on Friday arrested a 40-year-old casual labourer for raping a deaf-mute woman twice between April last year and March this year. The woman, aged around 35, is a relative of the accused, police said.

The woman voluntarily approached the Ponda police station, police officials said, but since the staff did not understand her sign language, they approached a non-governmental organization and a sign language interpreter to understand her situation.

Based on her statement, supported by the interpreter, the Ponda police arrested the man under the old law, the Indian Penal Code, for alleged rape. The accused was arrested under Section 376(2)(l) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police justified this by saying that despite the enactment of the new law (Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita 2023), they still arrested the accused under the old law because the crime was committed before the new law came into force.

Police said the woman was raped for the first time by the accused when she visited his house last year and a second time earlier this year. She said she remained silent because she was threatened by the accused, police said.

Ponda PSI Pragati Malik is investigating the case. A court in Ponda has remanded the accused in police custody for five days.
