NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh police have arrested former YSRCP MP J Sudhakar on charges of repeatedly raping a minor girl over a period of four years. The 50-year-old, who was previously MP for Kodumuru, was arrested on Thursday after the 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint and provided video evidence.

“He (Sudhakar) raped the minor girl several times between 2019 and 2023 when she was working as a maid in his house,” said Vijay Sekhar Reddy, police officer of Kurnool sub-district police.

The police have filed charges against Sudhakar under sections 376 and 506 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. After his arrest, he was remanded in judicial custody.

According to reports, a video showing the girl being sexually harassed was circulated online even before the new TDP-led government was formed in the state, but no one had filed a complaint against the sitting MP at that time.

On Thursday, the minor girl mustered up all her courage and filed an official complaint against Sudhakar, the first official charge since the new government came to power in Andhra Pradesh.

Incidentally, both the girl and her parents were employed as domestic help at Sudhakar’s residence in Kurnool city.
