2 people get life sentence for raping woman in moving car in Uttar Pradesh | News from India

AGRA: A fast-track court in Aligarh, India’s Uttar Pradesh state, on Saturday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for gang rape and robbery in 2022. The trial of a third accused, a minor, will continue separately. The survivor, who lived with her husband in Delhi, was on her way to her in-laws’ house in Uttar Pradesh when she was attacked, it was reported.

In her statement, the woman told the policemen that she had reached Aligarh at night on April 14 and took an auto from the bus stand to her village. The driver of the auto picked up two other men, whom he described as his friends, and took the wrong route to her village. When she protested, the driver said he wanted to drop one of his friends in a nearby village. While she was on the phone with her husband, the accused stopped the car, tried to strangle her and snatched her jewellery and handbag containing Rs 20,000. The two men raped her in the moving car before the driver stopped to rape her while her husband was on the phone all the time. They fled after dropping her near a canal. Workers of a nearby brick kiln heard her cries for help and called the police. The court also fined the two Rs 100,000 each.

Deputy District Attorney (Aligarh) Krishna Murari Johri said, “The stolen items found on the convicts, DNA report, forensic lab results, witness statements, victim’s statement in court and the fact that the victim’s husband was on call at the time of the incident played a crucial role in establishing the case against the three.”
