1 dead, 1 injured after Carmel restaurant fire; Firefighter Injured – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana traffic

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Firefighters found one person dead and a second injured person after a fire at a restaurant in Carmel.

Carmel Police Department officers were called to a welfare check in the 9800 block of Michigan Road, north of I-465, just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

When officers arrived, they found a woman in the middle of the street with severe burns, wrapped in a blanket and screaming for help.

Crews from the Carmel Fire Department arrived to find flames shooting from the roof of Jacquie’s Cafe, located in a shopping center near where the woman was found.

According to CFD Public Information Officer Tim Griffin, firefighters entered the restaurant but had to leave after the ceiling collapsed.

Griffin says firefighters found a way back into the restaurant and were able to extinguish the fire.

After the fire, emergency services entered the kitchen and found a man dead.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but firefighters believe it started in the kitchen.

“As far as we know, the kitchen crew arrived this morning to start work and when they opened the door it looked like it had already started,” Griffin told News 8.

A Carmel firefighter suffered a minor injury but is expected to be OK.

The burned woman was transported to Eskenazi Health. Her condition is unknown.

Griffin says the fire damaged the massage business next to the restaurant. It is unclear whether the store will be able to reopen.

Michigan Road has been closed indefinitely

Michigan Road will be closed in both directions between 96th and 99th streets “for an extended period of time,” the Carmel Police Department said.

Motorists should avoid the area and find an alternative route.
