Lynwood police officer shot during response to fatal shooting in Ford Heights – NBC Chicago

A Lynwood police officer was injured in a shooting early Saturday morning while responding to a fatal shooting in the suburb of Ford Heights, authorities said.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a shooting shortly after 3 a.m. in Ford Heights at the scene of a large gathering of people near the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and Ambassador Lane.

Upon arrival, officers treated a man who had been injured in the aforementioned shooting. The man was later transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Police Chief Leo Schmitz said.

Due to the large crowd at the scene, police officers from multiple counties were called to respond to the shooting, during which shots were fired at police, striking a Lynwood police officer in the shoulder, Schmitz said.

Schmitz said police returned fire but no one else was hit. There is no lockdown in the area and no danger to the public.

The officer was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and later released, officials said.

Authorities said the incident did not appear to be a domestic incident and that the investigation into the shooting was still in “very early stages.”
