Graceland foreclosure investigation handed over to federal authorities

The attempted forced sale of Graceland remains under investigation. Only now will federal authorities investigate the case.

“The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office investigated the Graceland case and it quickly became clear that this case was best suited for federal law enforcement. We have confidence in our federal partners and know they will handle the matter appropriately,” Amy Lannom Wilhite, communications director for the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, said in a statement.

On May 23, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said his office would investigate Naussany Investments and Private Lending, which were behind the attempted sale. However, Skrmetti’s office did not say which federal organization or agencies would take over the investigation.

The Graceland foreclosure case was a peculiar one. Naussany Investments issued three foreclosure notices beginning on May 6, alluding to a public auction of the historic Memphis property. On May 22, the foreclosure sale was halted by Chancellor JoeDae Jenkins following a hearing in Shelby County Chancery Court.

Following the May 24 hearing, Memphis-based law firm Morton & Germany filed the court-ordered temporary restraining order. Morton & Germany represents Riley Keough and The Promenade Trust, which own the Graceland estate. Keough is the daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley. Morton & Germany filed a counterclaim regarding the sale, saying the foreclosure claims were fraudulent.

Prior to the hearing, Morton & Germany had had no contact with representatives of Naussany Investments. (All addresses associated with the company were linked to PO boxes.) The morning before the May 22 hearing, the Shelby County Chancery Court received a letter from a certain Gregory Naussany asking the court to postpone the hearing. (The court denied this request.) After the May 22 hearing, the alleged Gregory Naussany sent an email to The Commercial Appeal requesting that the case be dismissed.

This email and correspondence was riddled with grammatical errors. In addition, neither the Shelby County Chancery Court nor the offices of Morton & Germany had been in touch with representatives of Naussany Investments. On May 25, The Commercial Appeal received a second email from an alleged Kurt Naussany, who is named in the original lawsuit along with a certain Carolyn Williams.
