Alabama tornado: twister near Athens; Madison, Huntsville and Decatur on alert

Multiple tornado warnings were issued across northeast Alabama on Wednesday, with Athens, Madison, Huntsville and Decatur on high alert. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning and urged residents in the area to seek shelter as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, tornado maps showed a massive tornado approaching Athens in Limestone County.

Several tornado Warnings were issued for northeast Alabama on Wednesday Athens, Madison, Huntsville and Decatur are on high alert. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued one warning, and asks residents of the region to seek shelter as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, tornado maps showed a massive tornado approaching Athens in Limestone County.

The latest news release from NWS Huntsville states that a tornado warning remains in effect until 9:15 p.m. (CDT) for northeast Madison, south-central Moore, southeast Lincoln and southwest Franklin counties.

“At 901 PM CDT, a confirmed tornado was located 7 miles southeast of Fayetteville and moving east at 25 mph,” the agency further added. Golf ball-sized hail is expected, they said.

“Flying debris poses a danger to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes are damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles occurs. Tree damage is likely.”

The NWS added that a tornado will occur near Huntland. Other locations affected by this tornadic thunderstorm include Lexie, Crossroads, Smithland, Molino, Plevna, Flintville, Elora, Lincoln, Crystal Springs and Kelso.

NWS said: “To reiterate, a tornado is on the ground. Take cover now! Go to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in an RV or indoors such as a vehicle, get to the nearest safe shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
