Houston BCycle program ends June 30

HOUSTON — You may have seen people riding around Houston for more than a decade, but soon the Houston BCycle bike-sharing system will be a thing of the past.

On Friday, the city announced it was ending the program, effective June 30. In a press release, the city said the system, which started with three bike stations in 2012 and grew to 150 stations at its peak, has not been able to sustain itself through to fees and sponsorships.

News of the closure comes just nine months after the Houston City Council approved half a million dollars to keep things running until other funding can be found.

The City of Houston and Houston Bike Share will work together to remove BCycle stations and bikes around the city.

As for the equipment, it will be sold to other bike sharing systems at auction.
