Canandaigua man arrested after dead horses found in barn, five in poor condition

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) — A Canandaigua man has been charged with animal cruelty after investigators found three dead horses in a barn and five others in poor condition.

According to the Ontario County Humane Society, they became involved in the investigation on May 26 after officers responded to an unrelated complaint at a Stoddard Road address involving the suspect, 76-year-old Alan C. Scrivener.

Officials said they searched the barn on Scrivener’s property and found five horses in two separate stalls. They added that the horses were standing in 5 to 6 feet of manure and were unable to leave the barn.

Officials also found bones in an outdoor pen attached to the barn. Humane Society investigators conducted a search on May 30 and found the remains of three horses in the barn.

Investigators said the five live horses’ hooves were curled due to neglect and lack of water. All of the horses were seized and taken away. They are now being cared for at a local livestock farm.

Scrivener was arrested and charged with five counts of cruelty to animals and five counts of failure to provide food and water to a seized animal. He was released on summons and is due to return to Hopewell City Court at a later date.

The Humane Society says this investigation is unrelated to an investigation in Farmington where two horses were found dead in a barn and four others were recovered.
