17-year-old murder suspect shot by LMPD officers identified

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the 17-year-old murder suspect shot and killed by a Louisville Metro Police Department officer. LMPD says they were investigating near South 3rd and Kenton Streets on May 14 when they spotted 17-year-old Brandon Marroquin, who police say is suspected of a murder. Marroquin was leaving a store in that area when police told him to stop, but he continued running, pursued by police. Two gunshots can be heard in the recordings, which police say first came from Marroquin and then from LMPD Det. Benjamin Derby. Police then rendered aid to Marroquin while waiting for emergency medical services to arrive at the scene. He was taken to UofL Hospital, where he later died from the gunshot wounds. The LMPD Public Integrity Unit is currently conducting an investigation into the shooting to determine if the use of deadly force was justified. Derby has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Marroquin was leaving a store in the area when police asked him to stop, but he continued running, pursued by police.

The LMPD released bodycam footage last week showing Marroquin running from police officers with a gun in his hand.

Eventually, the police forced Marroquin to the ground and repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon.

Police rendered aid to Marroquin while waiting for emergency services to arrive at the scene. He was taken to UofL Hospital, where he later died from gunshot wounds.

The LMPD Public Integrity Unit is investigating the shooting to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.

Derby was placed on leave for the duration of the investigation.
