ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Fulton County district attorney who filed a series of historic indictments against former President Donald Trump last year easily defeated a challenge from within her own Democratic Party.

Fani Willis defeated Christian Wise Smith in the Georgia general primary, setting up a November 5, 2024 race against Republican Courtney Kramer. Willis was declared the night’s first winner by the Associated Press, which called the race shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The Atlanta-based district attorney indicted Trump and 18 others in August 2023 for engaging in a criminal, racketeering, attempt to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. This election saw Joe Biden become the first Democrat since Bill Clinton in 1992 to win Georgia or any other Deep South state.

But now the Georgia Court of Appeals has agreed to consider a motion by Trump and his Georgia lawyers to disqualify Willis from his investigation because of a now-admitted relationship between Willis and a former special prosecutor charged with affair.

On April 1, Trump and the other defendants in Georgia’s historic racketeering indictment formally appealed Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee’s decision. This appeal came after McAfee gave the green light to allow such an appeal against his decision.

In March, McAfee rejected defense efforts to impeach Willis and his office because of her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, but he allowed the defendants to seek review of his decision from the U.S. District Court. call. In her ruling, McAfee wrote that Willis must remove Wade from the racketeering indictment if she were to remain on the case. Wade resigned just hours after this decision.

The move to disqualify Willis began in early January after Michael Roman, one of Trump’s co-defendants, and Ashleigh Merchant, Roman’s lawyer, accused Willis and Wade of having an inappropriate relationship. Willis and Wade have since admitted to having a romantic relationship.

Allegations that Willis took unfair advantage of her relationship with Wade roiled the case for weeks. Intimate details of Willis and Wade’s personal lives were played in court in mid-February.
