Houston Texans star receiver shows explosiveness against defender

Although it took three years to get there, John Metchie III has established himself as one of the Houston Texans’ top receivers. On the seventh day of Texans training camp, Metchie showed why he could be one of the team’s most explosive receivers next season.

During a one-on-one duel at the Houston Methodist Training Center, Metchie’s dribble move over veteran defensive back Mike Ford showed why the former Alabama prospect could have a career year in 2024.

Patience has been the key to helping Metchie overcome the daunting challenges that have overshadowed his career during his first two seasons in the league. A healthy Metchie will add to the Texans’ premier receiving unit, which will include Stefon Diggs and two receivers who emerged during Houston’s 10-7 season: Nico Collins and Tank Dell.

“What he went through – two years of not being able to practice football and all of a sudden he’s on the field last year – it’s really tough,” Slowik said.

“It’s a credit to him that he was able to do what he did last year. And now he’s had an offseason, a spring, a summer and a fall to really get back in shape, be where he wants to be physically. And then obviously the second year in the system for everybody has really slowed everybody down, calmed everybody down in that regard.”

Metchie gave the Texans a small glimpse of his talents during the first week of training camp. His play is proof that Houston enters the 2024 season with arguably the best receiving core in the league, poised to be essential to a potential championship run.
