Severe storms have arrived.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –

To update:

The severe storms have eased, but some areas will see rain until around 5 a.m.

——————————————

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for our region. There are several factors that are increasing our storm threat this evening. One of these elements is a cold front that is slowly moving across our area, helping to trigger showers and storms ahead of and along the front. There is also A LOT of instability (which is essentially energy that helps storms develop and intensify). There are also large amounts of moisture present, with dew points reaching well into the 70s.

So expect a stormy night and some of the storms could become severe. Damaging winds are the main danger, with some storms capable of producing wind gusts of over 70 miles per hour. This could cause tornado-like damage and result in some power outages. Other types of severe weather are also possible, including hail and tornadoes, although these pose less of a threat. Regardless, you should have a plan and multiple ways to receive serious alerts.

The best time for severe storms is now through 3 a.m. Friday. It could last until 5 a.m. in our West AL counties. If you don’t have it yet, please download our free WTOK weather app: https://www.wtok.com/page/download-our-apps/. Precipitation estimates are between 1 and 2 inches, but locally there could be more. Flooding is a concern.

By daybreak on Friday the storms will be behind us.
