The family said Ghnimat was a long-time mechanic and lived in the house for two years. Buying the house was a dream, the family said.

“He just wanted to work and then come home and be with his family. And it’s just a shame that someone comes and takes his life,” said Mohammad, Ghnimat’s brother-in-law.

He moved from Palestine to the Chicago area 18 years ago.

Ghnimat’s son said he was talking to him on the phone when he heard the shots.

When he came outside, he found his father murdered in their car.

“I’m devastated. It’s unexpected,” he said.

Broken glass still lay on the ground where relatives had gathered in front of the house on Tuesday.

“He parked the car and I was just talking to him. He was laughing and then I heard something – I thought it was fireworks. But when I went outside to check on him, I saw something. I told my mother to go inside and tried to call the police as soon as possible,” said Ghnimat’s son, who wished to remain anonymous.

Police are currently reviewing surveillance video that shows at least one shooter running away.

The motive is still being investigated.

Anyone with information about the homicide investigation is asked to call the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at 630-407-2343.
