Tulfo calls for suspension of PUVMP

Senator Raffy Tulfo speaks at a Senate hearing on public utility vehicles.

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Raffy Tulfo will file a resolution calling for the suspension of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

During the Senate Committee on Public Services meeting on Tuesday, Senate President Francis Escudero called on Tulfo to file a resolution after he expressed concern over the alleged failed implementation of the PUVMP.

Escudero said he has long opposed the PUVMP, saying it was rushed into implementation. He also pointed out that no matter how much PUVMP drivers worked, they could not afford the required jeepney models.

Tulfo said he would submit the resolution for the Senate to pass immediately.

“Ako has adopted a resolution to suspend the position of the PUVMP and is supported by the members of the Senate, the majority, the minority and even the Senate President – so be it,” Tulfo said.

(I will pass a resolution to suspend the PUVMP and my colleagues in the Senate, the majority, the minority and even the Senate President support me – so be it.)

The Senate President said he would help Tulfo get the necessary signatures

The PUVMP, a program of the previous administration, is a long-delayed plan to modernize the country’s jeepney systems. However, many transport operators have opposed the measure, arguing that they cannot afford it and that thousands will lose their livelihoods once it is implemented.
