‘Violent’ man killed in clash with Peoria police

A man was killed in a confrontation with several police officers in Peoria on Sunday.

Four Peoria police officers responded to a 911 call about a “violent” man around 12:33 p.m. Sunday and were dispatched to the 1800 block of W. Sherman Avenue, police said. Officers identified the person as Donald Wilson, 46, who had an arrest warrant for violating a protection order.

While officers were on scene, Wilson fled to the garage, started a fire, armed himself with a shovel and began beating officers with it, police said. Two officers deployed their “energy weapons” and one officer fired his weapon, police said. Wilson succumbed to his injuries.

All four officers were placed on emergency leave in accordance with service policy.

“The Peoria Police Department is committed to conducting an open and transparent investigation,” a police statement said. “The Peoria Police Department will cooperate fully with the Illinois State Police to ensure a thorough investigation.”
