Man arrested for four drunken rapes in Manchester city centre

A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with four recent drunken rapes in Manchester city centre.

Detectives investigating the attacks since February 2024 arrested the man in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspect targeted drunk men and women and also stole their personal belongings.

Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt, the police’s rape and other sexual crimes squad, described the rapes as “truly horrific”, adding: “No one should feel unsafe walking the streets of Greater Manchester.”

He added: “We urge anyone who has experienced sexual violence or abuse to come forward and report it to us. Every report will be thoroughly investigated and we will ensure you and your loved ones are fully supported every step of the way in our journey to justice.”

Police said officers “have supported and continue to support those affected” and are doing everything in their power “to provide them with the appropriate care they need at this time.”
