The METRO bus stop near East Houston Road and Sunbury Street is closed due to Beryl, leaving riders stranded

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — As we continue to recover from Hurricane Beryl, some Houston residents who rely on METRO bus service say they’re stuck.

A man who lives in northeast Houston called Eyewitness News to express concern that his regular bus stop, near East Houston Road and Sunbury Street, has been closed for 10 days.

According to METRO, three bus lines in our city have been diverted due to storm damage.

This is a tiny percentage when you consider that there are more than 9,000 bus stops in our city.

But for those affected, it is a major problem because they depend on these buses to work and eat.

“I paid a neighbor a lot of money to take me to the grocery store because there was no other way to do it,” says Paul Sweeton. “I mean, do I have to walk a mile, go all the way, and buy nothing but chips and bread, and then come back and do the same thing with your cold stuff?”

According to METRO, buses still cannot safely access his street due to high water.

So he and other neighbors walk more than a kilometer to the nearest open stop.

“Ten days is a long time. It’s a long walk, especially when it’s humid and you feel like falling. It’s a long walk,” said Alberto Herrera.

METRO officials say they will resume normal operations as soon as it is safe to do so.

The agency’s Park and Ride program was also interrupted due to storm damage, but is expected to resume normal operations Friday morning.
