Rutland man charged with child rape

A 54-year-old man was arrested in Rutland on Tuesday on child rape charges, authorities said.

Shawn Baillargeon is charged with aggravated rape of a child, sexual battery and battery on a child under 14, according to Rutland police. He was taken to East Brookfield District Court for arraignment.

Police said the Baillargeon investigation began in May when the department received several complaints about past sexual assaults in the city “over several years.”

“Rutland Police would like to commend the bravery of the victims who have come forward in this case,” police said. “We encourage all victims of sexual abuse to come forward and we promise to do everything in our power to offer support.”

The investigation is ongoing.
