  • Benjamin Hundeyin denied allegations that the police department was protecting the alleged rapist.
  • Hundeyin said the officer in question had reportedly gone into hiding after the incident but turned himself in for questioning on Saturday.

Police in Lagos said one of their officers had been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl.

This was announced in a statement released on Saturday by the command’s spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni, has since ordered a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the allegations.

The command assured the public that this was absolutely not an attempt at a cover-up as such heinous acts were contrary to the code of conduct and professional ethics of the Nigerian Police Force.

“For this reason, CP Fayoade once again assures Nigerians that if found guilty, the officer will be dealt with in accordance with police regulations and the law,” the statement said.

On Saturday, media reported that a 17-year-old girl reported to her parents a case of rape by a superior officer of Area H Command Ogudu in Ojota region.

The girl had asked the officer for help in recovering her stolen phone, which led to the alleged sexual assault. The officer had offered to help her after taking her statement, but allegedly raped her instead.
